VIRTUAL PUBLIC ART PROJECT

A global platform for the display of virtual public art

In 2009 Christian Meinhardt co-founded together with US-based artist Christopher Manzione the non-commercial Virtual Public Art Project (VPAP), a global mobile platform for the display of digital Augmented Reality artworks. VPAP was the first mobile Augmented Reality outdoor art experience ever.

"The art world is finally understanding that the idea of art in a gallery holds increasingly less value in an instantly gratified and visually saturated society. The problem now, is how to marry these new technologies with work that is often tied to a specific location or time. An interesting experiment that bridges the gap between the gallery and the real world is the Virtual Public Art Project, which utilizes mobile technology and augmented reality to allow users to experience decentralized sculptures across numerous international locations, including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia."(PSFK, New York)
